In New Hampshire, both parents have a legal responsibility to financially support their child(ren). The goal is for the child(ren) to have the same standard of living in both households.
The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services maintains guidelines to determine child support amounts. While many factors affect the ultimate child support award, the primary factors are the parents’ income and the number of children they support.
The court calculates each parent’s pre-tax income, then makes deductions for items like preexisting payments, retirement payments, taxes, childcare, and children’s medical expenses. The result is each parent’s adjusted gross income. The parents’ adjusted gross incomes are added together to obtain the parents’ combined income, which is then used to determine the amount of child support payments.
Lydon Law’s attorneys understand the complex nuances of the New Hampshire child support guidelines and we work to ensure child support orders are fair and equitable and work within the broader context of a divorce.
